Israel Adesanya had heated rivalries with Paulo Costa and Marvin Vettori. However, no one expected him to have an even more heated one with Dricus Du Plessis. Adesanya questioned the credibility of Dricus being an African. At UFC 290, he stated that Dricus would not have African ancestry if they conducted a DNA test. However, fans on Twitter posted a video of Adesanya claiming that Robert Whittaker cannot be a New Zealander, showcasing his hypocritical nature.
In the video clip, Israel Adesanya said, “He’s completely Australian. He disowned New Zealand in a way. I live in Auckland, and Auckland is my home. New Zealand’s my home, and Australia is his home. There’s a line in the sand, and you are on the other side.” Adesanya did not consider Whittaker a New Zealander like Dricus did not consider Adesanya to be an African.
The argument of Du Plessis indicated that Adesanya does not train in Africa. Hence, he cannot call himself an African champion. It is similar to what Adesanya said about Whittaker leading up to their fight in 2019. The video clip showcased the hypocritical nature of the middleweight champion, and fans believe that Adesanya has used race as a factor to increase the hype for the upcoming fight.
Adesanya and Du Plessis will fight soon at the Australian PPV in September. The duo can settle their rivalry once and for all at the event. Du Plessis has an undefeated record in the UFC and finished all but one opponent during his stint. He came to the UFC in 2020 and has displayed excellent striking and grappling inside the octagon.
Israel Adesanya hypes fight with Dricus Du Plessis
Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya entered the cage at UFC 290 to hype the fight against Dricus Du Plessis. He hyped the fight a bit too much with the use of racial slurs at the PPV. Later, Adesanya took to Twitter to increase the hype for the fight.
Adesanya wrote, “If you ain’t my brother, you ain’t African!! I will show you where you’re from, NI**A.” Adesanya had called Dricus a brother inside the octagon. However, Du Plessis savagely replied that he was not a brother of Adesanya.
Adesanya had to go on Twitter to give the rebuttal against the South African fighter. The duo will fight in Australia in September. If Dricus defeats Adesanya, it will become a huge upset in the middleweight division.
