Rising welterweight, Ian Garry, called out former interim champion, Colby Covington after defeating Geoff Neal at UFC 298. Garry is confident he can finish Covington. He believes Covington’s persona is fake. Garry says Covington was nearly cut before adopting his controversial persona.

Garry thinks he’s the biggest fight available for Covington right now. He said that Covington won’t get title fights due to bad matchups in an interview with Ariel Helwani. Garry wants to show he’s better than Covington as he would want a five-round main event in Ireland. Perhaps on the same card as Conor McGregor versus Michael Chandler. Garry promises to put Covington “face down on the canvas.” This is what he said:

Give me the guy who’s arguably the best at it. Let me show the world how much better I am than him, let me do it over five rounds, let me do it in a massive main event in Ireland, or a co-main event on the Conor McGregor-Michael Chandler card whenever that is. But, I promise you know, I will put Colby Covington face down on the canvas. Whether I knock him out or whether I choke him unconscious.

Ian Garry wants to test himself against an elite wrestler. He thinks it would be a striker versus wrestler fight. In his view, Covington is not as good of an athlete or technician. Also, Garry believes he has a superior mindset.

The matchup makes sense on paper. It pits a rising prospect versus a top contender. But it remains to be seen if the UFC books this fight. Garry continues to build momentum after four UFC wins. For now, this potential grudge match exists only as a verbal agreement.

Colby Covington went off on ‘legitimate cuck’ Ian Garry

Colby Covington aimed at rising welterweight, Ian Garry after Colby lost to Leon Edwards at UFC 296. Covington insulted Garry and his wife during an interview. He called Garry a “legitimate cuck” and his wife “vile.” Covington was also critical of her book about being a WAG.

Covington falsely claimed the book was about Garry’s wife being married to him while also dating another man. He is trying to provoke Garry into a fight. Covington said he’d be honored to settle their differences in the Octagon. It seems he hopes to bait Garry into accepting a matchup. With the recent developments after UFC 298, looks like Covington’s trash-talking has worked.

A fight with the rising star Garry could rejuvenate Covington’s career. Garry’s continued success could build momentum toward facing Covington. For now, Covington is simply angling for the fight through verbal attacks. He has built his persona on inflammatory trash talk and goading opponents to fight him.
