Ian Garry and his wife had a tough time by late 2023. Garry’s wife, Layla Anna-Lee, is 14 years older than him, and many fighters and fans found it worthy of criticism. Moreover, a satirical book Anna-Lee wrote in the past also came back to bite her. The hate for Garry was evident at UFC 298 even after he defeated Geoff Neal.

The criticism from fans did not end at the Honda Center. Fight fans on social media trolled Layla Anna-Lee after she posted a before-the-fight video on Instagram. In the video, Garry, Anna-Lee, and his corner embraced for a group prayer. Garry allegedly cried in the video. However, some fans found fault in the video as they questioned Anna-Lee’s body language. However, as many others found it unfair to criticize Anna-Lee, the tides have turned.

Fans and fighters alike have criticized almost all the details regarding Garry’s marriage with Anna-Lee. Garry has a stepson from his marriage with Anna-Lee, and thus, he changed his surname to Machado-Garry so that his stepson and son have it in common. Moreover, his stepson’s father, Richard Cullen, is his nutritionist. This made fans make allegations about Cullen living with the Garrys.

The online hat towards Garry was very high before his scheduled bout against Vicente Luque at UFC 296. However, Garry had to withdraw from the fight due to illness. This made fans and fighters further criticize Garry. Nonetheless, Garry came back to win inside the octagon again at UFC 298 against Geoff Neal. For UFC 298, he trained at Chute Box in Brazil with Charles Oliveira and Demian Maia. The Brazilian gym embraced Ian Garry as one of their own.
