Ilia Topuria has continued calling for a fight against Conor McGregor for quite some time. Now that Topuria has won the featherweight title, he sent a bold callout to the Irish superstar. ‘El Matador’ knocked out the dominant champion, Alexander Volkanovski, at UFC 298 to grab the 145lbs title.
Ilia Topuria taunted ‘The Notorious’ in his post-fight interview with a vile comment and called him out. He insinuated that Conor McGregor wasn’t brave enough to step into the octagon again. As such, McGregor fired back at the new featherweight champion on Instagram. Here is what he wrote:

‘El Matador’ further mentioned he wanted to face Conor McGregor in his hometown Spain. Ilia Topuria imitated McGregor and showed some glimpses of ‘The Notorious’ in the buildup. From the belt snatch incident to claiming the featherweight title with supreme confidence, everything hinted at the same. Many even critiqued him as a ‘McGregor wannabe.’ As such, a potential fight between these two men provides interesting scenarios.
However, Conor McGregor has gained much weight in his lay-off from fighting. Further, he might fight Michael Chandler at middleweight. So, this weight discrepancy made Ilia Topuria’s call out a bit ludicrous.
Ilia Topuria is not interested in facing featherweight contenders
Earlier, Ilia Topuria mentioned he wouldn’t give a title shot to Max Holloway, Brain Ortega, or Yair Rodriguez upon claiming the title. As such, he still stood by his word and made it clear during the UFC 298 post-fight press conference. When asked about it, ‘El Matador’ simply stated it didn’t make any sense. So, he expressed his wish for new title challengers. All the fighters mentioned above had their shot at the title against the dethroned champion, Alexander Volkanovksi.

Further in the presser, Ilia Topuria addressed the possibility of fighting the Dagestani phenom Movsar Evloev. Although he considered it a good fight, he wasn’t impressed with Evloev’s UFC record. As such, the Spaniard critiqued his finishing capabilities and brushed off the matchup.
While Ilia Topuria looked at the contenders in the featherweight division, Alexander Volkanovski called for a rematch. But, again, ‘El Matador’ wasn’t interested in it since he knocked ‘The Great’ out cold at UFC 298. So, what’s next for the new champion is to be seen. One thing was for sure: he wanted to bring the UFC to Spain and headline a card at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
