“He tried to make money” – Islam Makhachev alleges that Charles Oliveira was trying to avoid him
Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira
The Dagestani prospect, Islam Makhachev is set to face Charles Oliveira for the vacant Lightweight title at UFC 280. Makhachev who is currently on an exceptional ten-fight win streak will finally be getting his title shot. Oliveira and Makhachev will face off in the main event of the UFC 280 in Yas Island, UAE in October.
Makhachev is the training partner and childhood friend of the former UFC champ Khabib Nurmagomedov. Many believe him to be the next big thing in the division after Khabib left. The Dagestani hasn’t lost since 2015. After 23 fights, his record currently stands at 22-1. Makhachev is currently ranked #4 in the Lightweight division.
On the other hand, Charles Oliveira was the 155lbs champion. He was stripped of his belt after missing weight, tipping the scale by 1/2 pounds on 7th May at UFC 274 Oliveira vs Gaetjhe. Do Bronx was stripped of the Lightweight title by the Arizona Athletic Commission. Despite the weight miss and fighting Justin Gaetjhe in his backyard, Oliveira defied the odds and won in Round 3 by rear naked choke.
Do Bronx is currently on a 10-fight win streak, his last loss was in 2017 at the hands of Paul Felder. Do Bronx also holds the title for most submission wins in UFC history with 21 Submissions to his name. After 42 fights his record currently stands at 33-8-1.
Islam Makhachev condemns Charles Oliveira for not fighting real contenders
In a recent interview, Islam Makhachev appeared on the ESPN MMA’s show DC & RC hosted by Daniel Cormier and Ryan Clark. The Dagestani talked about his upcoming fight, his intentions after getting the title, his opponent and wrestling.
While discussing about his opponent he stated, “For me, this is embarrassing when UFC lightweight champion asks (for) someone like Nate Diaz or Conor McGregor, Conor McGregor, who won five years ago – nobody remembers when these guys win some fights. He tried to go Diaz or McGregor, but he forgot my name. And when they asked about me, he said he needs money or something like this, but when he fought Dustin (Poirier) or Justin Gaethje, he didn’t think about money.”
“He said, ‘Islam has to fight one more time,’ or something like this. But the UFC told him, ‘Hey, if you (don’t) take this fight, we’re going to give some chance to Michael Chandler.’ That’s why he take this fight.” He added.
Upon being told by DC that money is important, Makhachev ridiculed Oliveira for his inability to speak English which he thinks is hindering his marketability. “I don’t know. I don’t understand this guy, He tried to make money, but this guy doesn’t speak English. Nobody understands this guy. He doesn’t speak English.“
“English is important if you want to make money. You have to speak some language everybody understands. Nobody understands what he’s saying.” Makhachev said.
