“100 percent lucky punch” – Islam Makhachev discredits Adriano Martins’ win over him in UFC

Islam Makhachev is one of the most prolific fighters the UFC lightweight division has seen and he is finally getting his shot at the title. The Dagestani has only one loss on his record in professional fighting and the fighter looks at that one loss as a learning curve.

With a record of 22-1 in his career, Islam is heading into his first title shot in the UFC. He will be taking on the amazing Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 which will undoubtedly be one of the greatest matchups of all time. Islam is the teammate/friend of UFC Hall-of-Famer and arguably the greatest lightweight of all time, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Khabib retired with a record of 29-0 and Islam, who is claimed to be the next Khabib will always be pestered about his single loss.

As far as Islam Makhachev is concerned, that loss does not bother him too much because of how it played out. The fighter in an interview with Daniel Cormier revealed that he was undefeated heading into that fight and was a little too confident but he failed to remember that in mixed martial arts, anyone can beat anyone with a lucky punch.

His fight against Adriano Martins was only his second fight in the promotion and was coming off a submission win against Leo Kuntz in his debut. After Khabib’s success in the UFC, Islam was expected to go through Adriano but his opponent connected with an amazing strike and put the Dagestani down at UFC 192. Following his win against Islam, Adriano did not get a win in the next two years and was eventually cut from the roster.

“Before this fight, I think nobody can stop me. This is very dangerous [mentality] because small gloves, every punch is gonna be dangerous. That’s why I changed a lot after that fight. But this is a lucky punch 100 percent. After that fight, he never won,” said Islam talking to Cormier.

Following his defeat to Martins, Islam went on an undefeated run of 10 fights which got him a title shot against Oliveira, who is on an 11-fight win streak. Islam surely hasn’t shown any signs of losing since 2015. Who do you have winning the Makhachev vs Oliveira fight?
