Dustin Poirer also accepted the matchup considering it was his only way to fast-track his way to the title. However, Makhachev remained fair in his point of view and stated he chose Poirier only due to the unavailability of the rightful challengers.

I know Dustin (Poirier) does not deserve the title but we don't have any other option right now. Everybody (is) busy but I want to fight three times in the year.

Makhachev has so far defended his lightweight title against Alexander Volkanovksi twice. The first fight went to a controversial decision and in the second one, he knocked out Volkanovski. Wanting to extend his legacy, Makhachev aimed at attaining multiple title defenses soon. As such, he was open to fighting either Justin Gaethje or Charles Oliveira. But, due to the time clash, he welcomed the matchup with Poirier next. Nonetheless, he will have a close watch at UFC 300.
