“Beat old Tony” – Islam Makhachev invalidates Michael Chandler’s “Ridiculous” title fight claim

Islam Makhachev doesn’t think Michael Chandler deserves to be considered as a lightweight title contender. Lately, things have not been great between Michael Chandler and Islam Makhachev as both the fighters have constantly slammed each other online.

Recently, Makhachev made a tweet mentioning how he thinks Chandler’s claims about the title shot are baseless. According to the Dagestani, Chandler in his last fight only fought Tony Ferguson who is currently on the verge of his retirement. The fighter asked Chandler to fight tough and young fighters such as Drew Dober and Arman Tsarukyan.

He wrote: “Chandlers claims for title is ridiculous. Got finished in the title fight and then beat old Tony who’s 0-5 in last five.
Fight with young and hungry guys like Tsarukyan or Dober first, and we’ll see how good you are”

Chandler is 2-2 in UFC and has already lost one opportunity to get the title however, it seems like the fighter wants to try his luck again.

Michael Chandler, out of all fighters is surely extremely excited about the upcoming mega-fight between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliviera at UFC 280.

Ahead of the fight, Makhachev is being considered the favorite over Oliveira. This is something Chandler is unable to comprehend as he recently revealed in one of his interviews.

He said: “Charles has the upper hand, in my opinion. I think it’s crazy that he’s an underdog, but I do think Islam has the tools to be able to win. So we’ll see what happens on Oct. 22. I’ll be watching that very intensely, and I hope to face the winner.” (via MMA Junkie)

Chandler also mentioned that Makhachev’s popularity is mostly due to Khabib Nurmagomedov and the marketing he’s done. “You’ve got Khabib saying that Islam is better than Khabib. You’ve got this big hype machine coming up,” said Chandler. Next week in Abu Dhabi, the mega fight will finally go down and a lot of questions will get answered. Till then, fight fans should watch out for the pre-fight press conferences which will surely be entertaining.
