Islam Makhachev defended his title for the second time against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 294. The first fight ended in a controversial decision victory for Makhachev. Volkanovski came in with a point to prove. However, Islam Makhachev defeated Volk via a devastating head-kick knockout.

As soon as the fight started, Makhachev started using leg and body kicks to set up grappling exchanges. Volk did enough to even out the grappling. However, Makhachev switched a kick to land a head kick cleanly on Volkanovksi. This wobbled Volk, and Makhachev landed some more strikes before the referee ended the bout.

With the win, Makhachev has defended the lightweight title twice. He remains one win away from tying the record. Frankie Edgar, B.J. Penn, Benson Henderson, and Khabib Nurmagomedov have three title defenses. Makhachev has the chance and potential to become the new record holder with two more title defenses.

On the other hand, Volk will focus on the featherweight division. His quest to become a double champion may be over. He will likely take on Ilia Topuria in January if the medical suspension is not that long. Islam Makhachev will likely face either Justin Gaethje or Charles Oliveira for his next title fight.

Some fans attributed the EA UFC cover as the probable reason for the loss. Others felt Volk should not have taken the fight on such short notice. Fans also praised Makhachev for his excellent performance. Their rivalry at the moment is momentarily finished. They would now have to focus on their respective division.
