Islam Makhachev calls out Charles Oliveira
Islam Makhachev believes Charles Oliveira has been ducking him. The fighter cannot help but point out the irony in Charles’ recent interests while Makhachev waits for his shot at the title.
Islam Makhachev has been calling out for a title shot for the last two years. Islam is on a 10-fight winning streak and is also believed to be the next lightweight champion by many fans and pros. The Dagestani fighter has his eyes set on the lightweight title but it is still not a guarantee that he will be fighting for the title next.
Charles Oliveira, who was recently stripped of the title for his weigh-in mishap is confirmed to be the number 1 title contender and his next fight will involve the lightweight belt being put on line. Oliveira is not very invested in the idea of fighting Islam despite him being the next top contender. Oliveira has called out the likes of Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz for his next fight given the magnitude of the fight and the money involved in it for “Do Bronx”.
Islam recently was part of an interview for ESPN MMA with Brett Okamoto. The Dagestani fighter finds it hilarious that Oliveira claims Islam does not deserve a fight for the title but Conor McGregor, who has not won a fight in the last three years can be considered an option.
Islam Makhachev believes Charles might rule out the fight with him
“I don’t know because maybe if Charles says he is not ready. Or he says Islam does not deserve,” said Islam for the reasons why the fight between him and Charles might not take place. “But he asks about fighting with Nate Diaz or Conor. I want to ask him, ‘Hey these guys deserve it? The guys you call out?'”
Islam was initially scheduled to take on Beneil Dariush who is a top-five ranked fighter in the UFC but the fight fell off owing to an injury to Dariush. Oliveira believes Islam has not done enough to deserve a title shot. According to the Brazilian, a win against Dariush could seal Islam’s spot as the next lightweight title contender. Both Islam and Charles have had a trade of words on social media over this.
