“Can’t find my haters” – Islam Makhachev puts out Instagram post BRUTALLY berating his naysayers

Islam Makhachev

Islam Makhachev stunned the world two weeks back, when he submitted Charles Oliveira within the first round at UFC 280. His fans will say they saw it coming, but truth be told, even they would have expressed some shock at the nature of the finish.

Going into the fight against Charles Oliveira, people were quick to discredit Islam Makhachev for not having competed with anyone within the top five. Now that he has gone ahead and done exactly what he said he would, it feels like his doubters have disappeared.

In a recent Instagram post, Makhachev addressed just this. He wrote, “Haters before the fight – ‘He didn’t deserve, never fought top fighters, not his level, will get knocked out, submitted.’ After the fight, can’t find my haters, it’s hard without you guys.

There is some truth to his statement – going into any fight, analysts and fans try to pick out the weaknesses of a fighter that can let them down. For Charles Oliveira, the case was made for him absorbing one blow too many and getting downed. For Makhachev, on the other hand, people cited a lack of experience as one of the factors that could let him down.

Now that he has overcome that challenge, it only seems fair that all of the criticisms that Makhachev listed will become moot.

Despite not featuring on the main card, UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski was a regular fixture all along the buildup to the night of the fight. The reason for this is that the Aussie was selected by the UFC to play back-up to the main event – that is, fill in, if either of the fighters were unable to participate.

As we saw, it did not come to that. But, his trip to Abu Dhabi did have some utility, after all. At the post-fight octagon interview, Islam Makhachev issued his challenge to Volkanovski – that of him wishing to defend his title against the featherweight champion.

Dana White, also, has for a while said that Volkanovski is next in line for the title shot – that was confirmed in his post-fight press conference. If nothing untoward happens from now until February, Makhachev will travel down under to fight “The Great” in Perth, at UFC 284.

Alexander Volkanovski is number 1 on the pound-for-pound list, and Islam Makhachev stands at number 3. Although this specific ranking holds no weightage, it would still be a fight for the top spot and the title. Despite it not accounting for much on paper, the bragging rights will go to the winner of the bout.
