“He ain’t gonna stop him” – Islam Makhachev’s coach guarantees Alexander Volkanovski is not a threat to the Dagestani

Islam Makhachev's coach does not see Alexander Volkanovski as a threat to the Dagestani

Alexander Volkanovski might be pound-for-pound one of the most skilled fighters on the UFC roster but he is not a threat to Islam Makhachev, believes coach Javier Mendez.

Javier Mendez is the coach behind many legendary UFC fighters like Daniel Cormier, Luke Rockhold, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and now the highly-talented Islam Makhachev. Makhachev is believed to be the next ruler of the UFC’s lightweight division and the Dagestani patiently awaits his title shot to get his hands on the vacant lightweight belt.

Alexander Volkanovski, the featherweight king, and #2 pound-for-pound fighter in UFC has decided to move up a weight class. The Australian does not mind fighting either Charles Oliveira or Islam for the lightweight belt. In a recent interview with Submission Radio, American Kickboxing Academy Head coach, Javier Mendez speaks on Volkanovski challenging Islam for the lightweight belt. The Australian apparently does not faze the coach nor the fighter from Russia.

“I don’t think he poses as big of a threat to Islam as many would think,” said coach Javier shutting down the recent talk about Volkanovski having a chance against Makhachev. “He’s such a master on the takedown and Alex isn’t going to stop it, no matter what he does. And Islam’s standup is so damn good that he could stand with him.”

Javier then reveals the only way Alex will pose some kind of threat to the Dagestani. “Unless Alex’s ground improves tremendously, I don’t see it as a huge threat to Islam. I see Oliveira is a huge threat. Only because he ain’t gonna be able to stop Islam on the ground, and I just don’t think he can handle Islam’s ground game,” coach Mendez.

Volkanovski is undoubtedly the best featherweight on the planet right now. His third win against a legendary fighter like Max Holloway at UFC 276 showed how far ahead the Australian is from the rest of the division. Islam, on the other hand, has cruised through the lightweight division so far and is currently looking to fight for the title shot. He is the favorite to fight for the vacant belt against Charles Oliveira.
