Ryan Garcia who was undefeated until now tasted his first defeat in his pro boxing career. Meanwhile, Gervonta Davis successfully maintains his winning streak and defended his WBA lightweight title. Israel Adesanya coming out of his latest victory over long-time rival Alex Pereira was thoroughly entertained throughout the fight.
Adesanya gives commentary throughout the fight and drops some gems on sparring and boxing. He comments on Garcia’s style of not feinting right and says ‘Tank’ is going to do a Pereira right before Davis knocks down Garcia for the first time in the fight. “He did a Pereira,” Adesanya exclaims.
Adesanya faced Pereira for the fourth time at UFC 287. The duo had exchanged hands earlier, twice in kickboxing and once at UFC 281. And Alex Pereira defeated Israel Adesanya every time. But Adesanya changed the game at UFC 287. “The Last Stylebender” hit Alex Pereira four minutes into the second round with a brutal shot that knocked down the Poatan. Adesanya thus secured his first victory over Pereira and reclaimed his title as the UFC Middleweight Champion.
Israel Adesanya under heat for alleged “racist” comments
UFC 285 saw Dricus du Plessis, a new contender in the UFC, make comments against some of his fellow African UFC contenders. Dricus argued that his win would be the first UFC win dedicated to his country. He said that other title wins didn’t go to Africa- indicating to fighters like Israel Adesanya and Kamaru Usman who live in New Zealand and the USA.
Israel Adesanya obviously took offense to this. On his Youtube channel, he can be seen addressing the event. “I have never questioned him [Dricus Du Plessis] as an African. Who the f*** is this cra*ker gonna tell me who the f*** I am,” Adesanya said. “He’s next and I’m gonna f****** beat him till he’s black,” Adesanya added. This caused some outrage among fans who took it as a racial and derogatory comment from the fighter.
Both Adesanya and du Plessis haven’t mentioned each other or taken each other’s names directly. Fans await to see both of them settle their dispute in the octagon. Adesanya said in his post-fight press conference that he is ready to straighten him out but the fighter needs to gain some more experience under his belt first. Dricus du Plessis is set to fight Robert Whittaker next at UFC 290.
