UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has fought in Chinese promotions during his kickboxing days. He publicly appreciated the Chinese kickboxing community and loved Chinese culture. He recently called out Sean Strickland for calling him the first Chinese champion in the UFC.
Stylbender spoke about this on his FREESTYLEBENDER YouTube channel. Adesanya believes calling him the first Chinese champion insults the strawweight champion Zhang Weili. He said, “ Sean calling me the first Chinese champion, it’s kind of disrespecting her because she actually is the first Chinese champion legitimately. So you can’t make a mockery of that“. He also appreciated Weili’s efforts to learn English which is not her primary language.
Adesanya was breaking down “Magnum’s” fight against Amanda Lemos at UFC 292. He also acknowledged Weili’s career in the UFC and expressed the underrated career of Zhang despite competing in her fifth title bout. Adesanya also reminisced about his interactions with the strawweight champion in the past. He also spoke highly of Weili’s well-rounded arsenal.
Strickland has been going after Adesanya’s days in China as a part of his trash-talk for their title fight at UFC 293. Adesanya respects Weili and will not shy away from giving her the title of the first Chinese champion of the UFC. The interactions between the two champions remain a wholesome aspect of the sport. Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya greatly respects his Chinese roots as he believes they are one reason for his champion status. He immensely respects the Chinese people and the country. Strickland has taken a jab at Adesanya’s time in China multiple times, which has caught the eye of the middleweight champion.
Adesanya took to Twitter to reply to Strickland’s comments about China. He posted a video of him having dinner with a Chinese man. The man wanted Adesanya to knock out Strickland. Adesanya captioned the photo “For Sean” with the Chinese flag. He promised to knock out Strickland for disrespecting China.
The fight between the two middleweights is building up to be an entertaining one. Strickland is going into the fight as the underdog and will look to prove himself and earn the championship. On the other hand, Adesanya aims to cement his status as the middleweight GOAT. The fight promises fireworks and will be an entertaining bout overall.
