“Why did you BLAME me?” Israel Adesanya talks candidly about the LOWEST POINT in his MMA career
Yoel Romero vs Israel Adesanya at UFC 248
By persona, Israel Adesanya is one of the most exciting champions on the current roster of the UFC, however, by performance, “The Last Stylebender” goes through a few ups and downs here and there in his dominating title defences. It was quite evident in his last title defence against Jared Cannonier at UFC 276 when the live audience started leaving the fight by the time the fifth round started. Regardless, the Nigerian-Kiwi mixed-martial artist doesn’t make himself bothered because of it.
As a champion, Adesanya is the closest fighter to possibly surpass the middleweight great Anderson Silva in terms of being the greatest middleweight of all time for the City Kickboxing product and has recorded himself for the second-most title victories. Adesanya is 23-1 in his overall MMA career with 15 knockouts. His list of wins includes the likes of Cannonier, Yoel Romero, Robert Whittaker, Anderson Silva, Kelvin Gastelum, Marvin Vettori, Paulo Costa, Derek Brunson and many more.
Israel Adesanya claims that Yoel Romero repeated the same tactics in his next fight after him
In one of the videos on his Youtube channel, Adesanya talks about the lowest point in his MMA career as asked by his teammate and UFC light-heavyweight Tyson Pedro. Pedro is coming off a huge first-round knockout win from UFC 278. To talk about his overall combat sports career, Adesanya never has much of a low point, but he certainly doesn’t have any in MMA to think of casually. However, he knows what his lowest point was and that was definitely not his only loss to Jan Blachowicz at UFC 259.
“If I am being honest, the Romero fight,” says Adesanya. Adesanya’s fight with Yoel Romero at UFC 248 is considered one of the least entertaining fights in UFC history. The style was that Adesanya was waiting for Romero’s heavy shots to counter them but Romero rather decided to shell himself up and don’t open up quite often which made both sides extremely cautious of each other.
“He had another fight after me and he did the same thing. The smart people were like ‘Oh Adesanya was right, he’s doing the exact same thing’ because he knew if he made a move against me the wrong way I was gonna catch him… after that fight, I was like- I was fighting. He was just standing there. Why are you blaming me? Now I am just like, ‘whatever’…” says Adesanya.
What do you make of Adesanya’s thoughts on the lowest point of his MMA career? Do you see where he is coming from? Where do you put Adesanya’s first title defence against Yoel Romero amongst the most hated fights of all time? Regardless, the UFC 248 fight card will always be remembered for the greatest women’s MMA fight in history when Zhang Weili successfully defended her title against Joanna Jedrzejczyk in an all-out war in the co-main event. Also, UFC 248 was the last numbered PPV event before the pandemic hit the world.
