UFC welterweight Stephen Thompson recently amazed fans with his striking skills during a sparring session against a jacked partner. The encounter went viral on social media. The video showed Thompson’s expertise in leg kicks, something Thompson is famous for in the UFC.
In the training footage, Thompson’s opponent writhed in pain against Thompson’s kicks on the back of his thigh. This is despite the muscular build of his opponent. The video showed the effectiveness of leg kicks in combat sports and Thompson’s skill. Renowned for his striking ability, Stephen Thompson demonstrated the power of leg kicks.
The muscular build of Thompson’s opponent did not protect him from the impact of the kick. Thompson is a lean and lanky individual. Thus, the video reinforces the idea that skill and technique are paramount in martial arts. Thompson’s ability to strike quickly and accurately stood out in the video. He consistently hit his target and made the jacked man’s thigh swollen red.
Thompson’s upcoming opponent is Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 296. Rakhmonov is undefeated in professional MMA and has a 100 percent finishing rate. Thompson had already fought for the title twice when Tyron Woodley was the champion. However, he was unsuccessful in both attempts.
Nevertheless, a win over Rakhmonov could land him a third crack at the title. Incidentally, Colby Covington will get his third crack at the title in the main event of UFC 296 against Leon Edwards. Covington was unsuccessful in his previous two attempts against then-champion Kamaru Usman.
Stephen Thompson responds to Joaquin Buckley allegations
Stephen Thompson recently appeared on Submission Radio. Thompson talked about many things during the interview, mainly concerning UFC 296. UFC 296, headlined by Colby Covington and Leon Edwards, is one of the most anticipated fight cards of the year. The PPV is also the final event of the UFC in 2023.
During the interview, the topic of Joaquin Buckley‘s allegations came up. Buckley recently tweeted that Thompson will pull out from his scheduled bout. Moreover, he even offered to step up if such a scenario arises. However, Thompson was surprised to hear about this. This was his response:
I'm there for UFC 296, man. Me and Shavkat are going to be duking it out, so don't worry. Don't worry, Buckley, we're going to be there.Stephen Thompson via Submission Radio
Buckley is one of the outspoken fighters in the UFC. He moved down to welterweight after consecutive losses at middleweight. At welterweight, Buckley has won two in a row. Thompson has not fought since December of 2023, when he fought Kevin Holland. However, he was set to fight Michel Pereira at UFC 291, but Pereira missed weight, and the fight was scrapped.
