Jake Shields believes “Fake Gangster” Khamzat Chimaev was terrified during his scuffle with Paulo Costa
Shields was with Costa training BJJ when the scuffle broke out
When he woke up today to train with Paulo Costa, Jake Shield might have not expected that by the end of the day he’d share center stage in a feud with Khamzat Chimaev. However, that is exactly what happened and now Shields has a great story to tell all the media outlets.
Jake was training alongside Costa, who is still in the States to figure out the details of a future re-signing with the UFC. The two were drilling some BJJ when they heard the Chechen contender, Chimaev call out to Costa from outside the cage. Shields who had no prior contact with Costa apart from Twitter interactions walked along with Costa regardless as he headed over to confront Chimaev’s team.
Shields is a teammate of Chimaev’s opponent, Nate Diaz and hence was all too happy to partake in conflict when it arose. “When you pick a fight with my training partner you pick a fight with me” , said Shields later, describing why he decided to jump in.

The two would not make physical contact but got damn near close to it. After some intense back and forth, Chimaev’s team finally dragged their fighters away from the cage and down the stairs. Later on Shields would talk to multiple media organizations detailing the events that preceded and proceeded with the alleged scuffle.
“We were just working on some drills with Paulo, just talking, chilling and out of nowhere Khamzat comes over, start talking shit, he has like 10 dudes with him” , said Shield detailing how the brawl started. Shields said Chimaev kept calling out for a fight but his teammates stepped in and blocked Costa’s path when he tried to walk over to Chimaev
Jake then said that he had actually crossed paths with Chimaev earlier during the day but decided to not stare or look at his training as he felt that would be disrespectful. However, he alleged that some among Chimaev’s team, including himself were scoping out Costa’s training for almost 10 minutes before they finally approached him.
“He was standing outside the cage saying ‘let’s fight now’ and when Paulo started moving out, he just walked back, you know kind of seemed like a weak thing, I think that’s why he was upset cause Paulo called him a fake gangster and it was a perfect example for him being a fake gangster”, said Shields on his feelings about the entire incident.
Currently, Chimaev is in a complete weight cut down to Welterweight while Costa is well over 220 pounds. How do you think a fight at that moment in time would’ve played out? Let us know!
