Jessica Andrade is a Brazilian mixed martial artist and a former UFC Women’s strawweight champion. Furthermore, Jessica Andrade is known for her aggressive fighting style and has competed in the strawweight and flyweight divisions. 2023 remains an uneventful year for Andrade’s career because she will have her fifth fight at UFC 295.
However, in a recent press conference, Andrade revealed why she has fought consecutively since January 2023. Andrade cited her divorce and its proceedings as the main cause. Furthermore, Andrade spoke about it before her fight at UFC 295 to MMA Fighting. This is what she said:
This year I had my divorce, that has taken a lot of my money in paying for lawyers and things here and there, so I ended up taking five fights.Jessica Andrade via MMA Fighting
Hence, Andrade confirmed that the reason behind her five consecutive fights this year was her divorce and its financial burden. Furthermore, she stated that the lawyers in Brazil were costly, and she complained about the bureaucracy in the nation. Andrade married her long-time lesbian partner, Fernanda Gomes, back in 2019. Subsequently, Gomes was part of Andrade’s corner for several years and remained a huge part of Andrade’s fighting career. In addition, Andrade has described Gomes as her support system, who has helped her a lot over the years.
Andrade stated that this matter will be over after this year, and she will no longer have this financial burden. Subsequently, Andrade mentioned the divorce affected her mentally for the fights. She hopes to turn her fortune around at UFC 295.
Both Jessica Andrade and Mackenzie Dern are going through a divorce
Andrade’s next fight is against Mackenzie Dern in a strawweight bout at Madison Square Garden, New York City. Ironically, both fighters are currently going through a divorce, and they plan on releasing their demons against each other.
Furthermore, Dern announced her divorce from the pro-surfer Wesley Santos at the beginning of this year. During their press conference for this UFC 295 fight, Andrade spoke about how she and Dern had a similar experience. However, Andrade mentioned that, though they dealt with a similar situation, her divorce lasted longer. The strain the divorce took on Andrade remains evident as she has yet to win a fight in her last three times. Her opponents, Yan Xiaonan, Erin Blanchfield, and Tatiana Suarez, finished her in less than seven minutes.
Andrade lost three of her last bouts via two submissions and one knockout. Hence, Andrade stated that she has a different hunger to win and a different fighting strategy. On the other hand, Dern aims to overcome the destructive power of Andrade and extend her winning streak.
