“She was the champ at that time”- Joanna Jedrzejczyk believes ‘championship status’ swayed the decision in Zhang Weili’s favor during their last fight

Zhang Weili vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk

Joanna Jedrzejczyk will return to the Octagon next month at UFC 275 against Zhang Weili. It is her first fight in the UFC since their first matchup at UFC 248. The first fight between these two is considered one of the best fights in the history of the UFC.

Both Joanna and Weili are coming off from losses, and it’s almost impossible for them to deliver a better fight than their last one. Weili’s 21-fight win streak was snapped by Rose Namajunas, and after losing another fight against her, she is itching to get back on the win column.

Fans cant wait to see these two run it back again, and considering the current scenario of the strawweight division, the winner of this fight could very well be fighting for the title. Rose Namajunas lost her title to Carla Esparza in a title rematch at UFC 274, and Joanna holds a win over Carla.

The first fight against Weili was very close, but this time Joanna is ready for a more tactical bout to get her hand raised. Talking to the reporters during UFC 275 virtual conference call, she said, “I need to be a bit smarter. I’m going to come back. I’m very happy to get my second fight with Weili Zhang and go for the belt right after.”

She added, “Last fight was very close, and the decision could go either way. I felt like I did enough in the first fight. She was the champ at that time, so sometimes you have to do more to beat the champion. But I feel like I gave all I had in Vegas in March 2020, so we’re working on some things. We’re sharpening some tools.”

“I just have to stay calm, be smarter, bring all my tools to the octagon, and I will win. I will get this victory and go for the belt right after,” Joanna concluded.
