Joanna Jedrzejczyk signs a multi-fight deal with the UFC as the former champion returns to Octagon after more than 2-year layoff
Joanna Jedrzejczyk
Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is going nowhere and hence is not leaving the world’s biggest MMA promotion. Jedrzejczyk, the longest-reigning strawweight champion, last fought in February 2020, when she fought a battle to be remembered for the ages against another former champion Zhang Weili, who’s also the first-ever Chinese UFC champion. The 2 women are bound to return against each other in a rematch in Singapore on June 11, 2022.
Jerdrzejczyk in her prime was considered by many the greatest women’s MMA fighter. Her wins included the likes of Claudia Gadelha, Carla Esparza, Jessica Penne, Valerie Letourneau, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, Jessica Andrade, Tecia Torres, Michelle Waterson and many more. Joanna’s end to her championship run came at the hands of the current champion, Rose Namajunas, who’s going to defend her title next week against the first-ever UFC strawweight champion Carla Esparza.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk talks about her wish to retire from the UFC only
On the occasion of signing the new deal with the UFC, Joanna told MMA Fighting “It’s a multiple-fight deal, I always said that I want to retire in the UFC, and of course, people would love to see me doing this or that after, but I feel like if I retired from MMA, I would retire from the UFC, the best MMA league in the world.
“I don’t want to go somewhere and fight for this bigger money. Money is not everything. I’ve saved enough money for myself, for my kids, for my grandkids probably, but it’s not only about the money. You need to have this pride in yourself and you have to know what to do and how to prioritize some things. This is what I’m trying to do,” she said. [h/t MMA Fighting]
What do you make of Joanna’s re-signing with the UFC? Do you feel the female Polish megastar of the UFC still got it to become the world champion all over again? Only her rematch against Weili, against whom she was defeated in the first fight, would possibly steer her destiny for the future as a fighter.
