Sean O’Malley and Tim Welch recently grazed the Joe Rogan Experience. The fighter and his coach discussed various topics with Joe Rogan. The topics mainly revolved around the UFC, with the trio discussing upcoming and potential matches for the promotions. During their conversation, the topic of UFC 294 came up, which all favored Islam Makhachev to win. They also delved into the main event of UFC 296, the welterweight bout between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington.
About Islam, O’Malley said, “You know what Islam got very underrated striking. That motherf**ker is skilled on the feet.” Rogan added, “He’s big dude. Big back. He’s thick.”. The topic became interesting when the trio were reminded of Covington’s callout of Makhachev. Rogan echoed, “Colby can make 55. He is not a big 70 at all.” O’Malley further added, “Islam probably is bigger than Colby or around the same size.”
Even though both Makhachev and Covington are interested in fighting each other, they have to deal with their respective opponents first. Makhachev will defend his lightweight title in the upcoming pay-per-view against Charles Oliveria. Conversely, Covington would be challenging Leon Edwards for the welterweight strap at UFC 296.
Sean O’Malley was presumed to fight at UFC 296 against Marlon Vera. However, Jon Jones‘ reluctance to have Covington anywhere near him forced the promotion to tweak their plans. Jones will defend his heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295. With Henry Cejudo insinuating that the featherweight title fight was due for a January pay-per-view, O’Malley’s first title defense would be extended.
Javier Mendez envisions a potential super fight of Umar Nurmagomedov vs. Sean O’Malley matchup
In a recent interview with The Schmo, Javier Mendez discussed his thoughts on a potential bout between Umar Nurmagomedov and Sean O’Malley. Mendez was speaking to Schmo after the conclusion of the Bellator 300 press conference.
At Bellator 300, Usman Nurmagomedov, the younger brother of Umar Nurmagomedov, would be defending his title against Brent Primus. O’Malley himself once echoed Mendez’s thoughts. In an interview with ESPN, the bantamweight champion found the potential bout to be massive. He found the bout as a successor to Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor at UFC 229. This was in reference to the Irish vs. Russian rivalry in MMA.
Mendez also discussed Islam Makhachev and his bout at UFC 294. He was adamant that Makhachev had a different style than the “Eagle.” He further explained that the lightweight champion would soon step out of the retired fighter’s shadow.
