Worst MMA take? Joe Rogan’s idea to ‘legalize’ illegal fight moves leaves fans dumbfounded
Joe Rogan ,illegal elbow(the conversation/MMA mania)
UFC commentator and popular podcast host Joe Rogan is no stranger to making controversial statements every now and then. In his recent episode of The JRE with guest Jorge Masvidal, Rogan talks about how certain heavily damaging moves should be legalized inside the octagon. According to him, strikes to the back of a fighter’s head should be allowed in MMA.
Strikes to the back of the head or rabbit punching is deemed illegal across all forms of combat sports, due to its high injury risk, serious and irreparable brain damage to the brain stem and spinal cord. Causing career-ending injuries and in certain cases coma, the use of rabbit punching is heavily shunned. But unlike everyone, Joe Rogan seems to think differently. “I don’t even know if we should stop hitting people in the back of the head. It doesn’t seem to make any sense“, said Joe on his podcast with Jorge Masvidal agreeing.
Rogan justifies his opinion immediately after making the statement. He gave an example to prove his point saying “Like Ciryl Gane and Junior Dos Santos, Gane kind of hit him with an elbow in the back of the head.” He added, how a lot of knockouts like the high kicks go around the shoulder and wrap around the back of the head, and it’s still legal. Regardless of his justification, fans did not take kindly to his comment.
Fans at the moment seem to be very upset with this statement, calling it possibly the worst Rogan combat sports take ever. Many have taken to Twitter to criticize this opinion. This statement comes from someone who’s been in the UFC for over nearly 2 decades and is highly knowledgeable on the devastating effects of this move. But for Joe Rogan, it should be alright since it was used in the ‘No holds Barred fighting’ days.

How can someone even remotely defend themselves if someone’s backpacking them throwing elbows to the back of their head? Like imagine if they were legal in this situation? This would get way to dangerous pic.twitter.com/2YDynhMNEW

I agree with him that banning knees to downed opponents doesn’t make sense. I disagree on the back of head talk.

Masvidal doesn’t seem to understand those wrestlers would also be able to knee to the head…
— ColbyBot (@ColbyBotV2) March 23, 2023
Not even bkfc would allow that, and that’s saying something

I don’t understand how joe rogan knows more about combat sports than all of us combined but still has the most casual takes imaginable

You can literally die from one strike to the back of the head, it’s illegal for a reason

I’m so glad Joe is not in a position to change any rules. I remember he laid out what MMA should be in his mind and it sounded awful. It was bare knuckle and took place on a basketball court…he constantly tries to make it street fighting when it’s not, it’s a sport.

If they allowed grounded knees and shots to the back of the head, wrestlers would be inflicting so much more damage.

They think it’d swing things in a striker’s favor, but the opposite would happen.
Holy shit???

Strikes to the back of the head or rabbit punch are banned across all boards of combat sports. Rabbit punches are more often seen in boxing. Most of these punches land unintentionally due to head movement. But, when used intentionally such moves result in disqualification.
