“Throwing me on the ground,” Joe Rogan reveals how locker room bullying shaped his mixed martial arts career

Joe Rogan is one of the most famous and influential people in the UFC. The UFC color commentator due to his stand up comedy and podcast has reached a level of fame some can only imagine. Despite his podcast and Comedy gigs doing incredibly well Rogan still gives time to UFC as a commentator. It’s his love for martial arts and organisation that makes it possible for him to do so. However, Rogan in his podcast with guest Theo Vonn revealed why he really started practicing martial arts.
Joe Rogan started martial arts at a very young age. at the age of 14, Rogan took up karate and switched to Taekwondo the following year. At 19 Rogan won the US Open Championship taekwondo tournament. he also practiced kickboxing but retired at 21 due to suffering constant headaches and injuries. He later took up jiu-jitsu under Carlson Gracie after watching Royce Gracie. Rogan has great experience in different forms of martial arts. However, on his podcast, Joe Rogan revealed why he started practicing in the first place.
Rogan, with guest Theo Vonn, discussed mental health, self-confidence and dark days of his life on his podcast. Joe Rogan later revealed that he once fought with another kid in the locker room. “ I do remember him getting me in a headlock, throwing me on the ground. He then leaned like he was gonna punch me in the face, but decided not to. I didn’t know what to do,” said Joe Rogan. “I avoided that kid every time I saw him, I was like see him in the other side of the school and I was like f**k I gotta go around.” added the UFC color commentator.
Rogan mentioned that he felt helpless at that point and felt like he needs to do something about it. This fear of being helpless got him into martial arts. This was one of the most crucial decisions according to Joe Rogan and it changed every dimension of his life.

Joe Rogan has been studying and practicing martial arts since a very young age. He is knowledgeable in many different forms of martial arts . He even taught Former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion George Saint Pierre a thing or two about striking. Lex Fridman who appeared as guest on ” The Joe Rogan Experience“ talked with Rogan about self-defense. He also asked the color commentator his opinions on the best martial arts for self defense.
Joe Rogan at first said Jiu Jitsu but then changed his answer to any sort of grappling. Lex Fridman then questioned what were his views on Krav Maga. To this Joe Rogan stated that” it would be surprising if a person practicing Jiu Jitsu didn’t f**k up the person who practices Krav Maga”. Rogan slammed Krav Maga some more and said it works on people who don’t know anything about fighting.
Rogan also added that Judo is a great martial art for self defense as well. While Joe Rogan believes that grappling would work great for self defense he added some striking is necessary too . In the end Rogan concluded his opinion and stated what martial arts one should prefer. ” The best martial arts are the martial arts that work on martial artists and not the one that work on untrained people.“ said Rogan.
