“Maybe there’s a way”- Joe Rogan suggests interesting changes in scoring policies of modern-day MMA
Joe Rogan
Joe Rogan talks about modern-day MMA scoring! There have been a lot of controversies regarding the current state of judging in the MMA. Holly Holm’s recent split decision loss against Ketlen Vieria turned many heads, and Herb Dean’s awkward stoppage in the Alexander Volkov vs Jairzinho Rozenstruik fight is another example.
Herb Dean has been the center of controversy for some terrible judging in the past, but this one received mixed reactions from the MMA community. Some thought Herb did a great job of jumping in to stop the action, while others argued that Jairzinho was clearly getting back on his feet, and a little mess up on Herb’s part made Jairzinho miss a huge career opportunity.
Many fighters and fans have motioned for open scoring, but some are against it. People are asking for new and improved rules, and the most prominent figure in the MMA, Joe Rogan suggested some nice measures.
Joe Rogan reveals the things that make a big impact on scoring
Talking about it on a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, he said, “Maybe there’s a way to score it like you would give points for moments in fights where someone either did damage or someone had control, but control was not worth as much as damage. Even though the person’s in control of you, it’s not that big of a deal. But then damage: How much more is damage worth? Like if you see the person gets wobbled or you see like a big, impactful kick, you’re like, ‘Wow, that was a significant moment in the fight.”
He further stated, “Successful execution of takedowns, submission attempts, reversals and the achievement of advantageous positions that produce immediate or cumulative impact with the potential to contribute to the end of the match, with the IMMEDIATE weighing more heavily than the cumulative impact.”
“It shall be noted that a successful takedown is not merely a changing of position, but the establishment of an attack from the use of the takedown. Top and bottom position fighters are assessed more on the impactful/effective result of their actions, more so than their position. This criterion will be the deciding factor in a high majority of decisions when scoring a round. The next two criteria must be treated as a backup and used ONLY when Effective Striking/Grappling is 100% equal for the round,” Rogan concluded.
