UFC commentator Jon Anik rubbed Welterweight contender Colby Covington the wrong way with his support for Belal Muhammad. Anik said that Belal is more deserving of a title shot than Colby. Belal claimed that skin color determined Covington’s title shot. In an interview with Mike Heck of MMA Fighting, Colby Covington threatened to “kill” Anik after supporting “a racist” Belal Muhammad. Recently, Jon Anik said he is in a pretty good place despite threats from Covington.
Jon Anik said, “Good is probably a fine adjective to use. Ultimately, all I need to make sure is that the professional nature of our relationship is such that I can call his fight, ideally, have a fighter meeting with him before his fight. We have discussed things privately, and I do think that I have to be careful when it seems like I might be backing one welterweight candidate over another.”
He continued, “So, my first order with Colby, whatever he had said, however threatening – and I didn’t feel particularly threatened. It was Colby Covington in character as far as I was concerned – but I just have to take very seriously when a professional athlete on this roster – low profile, high profile – is upset with something I have said. So, I have to attack that layer first, and I think Colby and I are in a pretty good place, and I am excited for whatever is next for him.”
It looks like the Colby situation does not worry. However, he does acknowledge that supporting one Welterweight contender over another can land him in trouble like this. Anik insists that he is excited about Colby’s Welterweight title fight. Colby will take on Welterweight champion Leon Edwards later this year.
Colby Covington recieves another title shot
UFC President Dana White has confirmed that Colby Covington will challenge for the UFC Welterweight title. In 2018, he defeated Rafael dos Anjos to become the Interim Champion but was stripped after refusing to fight for the Undisputed belt.
His previous title shots came against Kamaru Usman in 2019 and 2021. The first fight was a controversial TKO finish, but the second time was a unanimous decision victory for Usman. Now, Colby finds another chance at the title, which could be the last time.
Dana White has confirmed that UFC will try to book Edwards vs Covington title fight for later this year. Edwards and Covington have never faced each other, and the fresh match-up between the pair makes it exciting for the fight fans.
