Colby Covington was found in the midst of another controversy after appearing to have issued death threats toward Jon Anik. The former interim welterweight champion was mad at Anik for supporting Belal Muhammad‘s claim for a title shot over him. With things gone too far, many fans stepped in to defend Jon Anik. However, Anik himself clapped back at Colby Covington when he subtly roasted him on national television.
UFC has seen its fair share of trash talkers throughout its 30 years of operation. Trash-talking is a very important aspect of marketing when it comes to selling fights. A fight between two individuals with a history or hatred sells much more. Colby Covington is one of those trash-talking fighters who manages to sell fights with his on-mic banter.
While Covington is a great trash talker, he tends to take things too far. Similar was the case when ‘Chaos’ appeared to have issued death threats to UFC’s favorite color commentator, Jon Anik. “Jon Anik, I don’t want your kids to grow up without a dad. Just realize you live in Boca, I live in Miami m**er. You’re not too far from me so you better shut your f***ing mouth. You poked the bear, now you get the best it comes after you,” read the tweet.
Jon Anik later cleared that he does not feel any threat from Colby despite the seriousness of the situation. While Anik believes that calling him out for his opinions on the title shot situation was fair, talking about his family was just a veil and an empty threat. Anik also took shots at Colby Covington when talking about Masvidal vs Burns on the UFC 287 broadcast. Praising Masvidal for his legacy and reliability, Anik subtly snuck in a roast for Colby. “He has never once, unlike Colby Covington, needs to step out of his own skin to have a fanbase.“
This jab at Covington was appreciated by many Anik fans. Covington has faced severe backlash since his comment on Anik. This, however, doesn’t change the fact that Colby Covington is still the next in line for a title shot against Edwards.
Fighters and MMA fans support Jon Anik after Colby Covington issues death threats
Colby Covington is not a rookie when it comes to creating controversy. With Colby playing the character of the bad guy in the UFC, many of his statements revolve around insulting the fighters on their personal matters. While Colby manages to sell fights with his banter, the extreme nature of his insults lands him in trouble. However, things went too far when Colby issued death threats to UFC color commentator Jon Anik.
Colby Covington called out Belal Muhammad for issuing a tweet regarding him being the backup fighter for Edwards vs Usman 3 at UFC 286. The tweet was deleted later on, but Jon Anik defended Belal by bringing up his winning streak. After this incident, Colby Covington issued a death threat to Anik stating “he does not want Anik’s kids to grow up without a father”.
This move by Covington was heavily shunned by the fighters and the MMA community. Fighters like Belal Muhammad and retired fighter Brendan Schaub called out Colby for his behavior. Many fans thought Colby took it too far and even justified Masvidal jumping on Colby. Colby Covington might have not learned anything, but Anik gained a lot of sympathy from his fans.
