UFC released its 5th edition of the UFC game just a few weeks back. Now, an old video of Jon Jones playing UFC 4 has resurfaced on the internet. The video was taken at least a couple of years back, and it had Jon Jones playing the game for the very first time. He was surprised to see himself listed in the heavyweight division because he was yet to fight as a heavyweight. Although, what caught the attention of the MMA world was his opponent selection in the game. Jon Jones had his arch-rival Daniel Cormier as his opponent while playing the game.
Anyway, Jones reacted hilariously to his inclusion in the heavyweight division of the game. Further, he appreciated his character’s physique in the game. Here is what Jones said about it:
My very first time playing UFC 4. And I had no clue that they put me in the heavyweight division already. Look at me a little puffed up. I see the extra shoulders. I appreciate it.Jon Jones via Instagram
Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier had a turbulent relationship since the first-ever interaction between them. As such, they fought inside the octagon a couple of times. But Jones got the better of Cormier both times. However, the second meetup between them became a no-contest after Jones tested positive for a banned substance. The two haven’t settled their dispute until now, but they have utmost respect for each other.
Jon Jones is the current UFC heavyweight champion. He was scheduled to fight Stipe Miocic for his first title defense. But, he pulled out due to an injury caused while training. On the other hand, Daniel Cormier retired from the sport of MMA in 2020. Now, he works with the UFC and ESPN as a commentator and an analyst.
First meeting of Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier
It was well known that Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier were destined rivals. But, what most of them don’t know is the origin story of their hatred. It all started when they met backstage in UFC 121. Jon Jones shared his interpretation of their meeting in an old interview.
Jones said he wanted to develop a friendship with Cormier and started the conversation with banter by acting like he didn’t know who Cormier was. Further, Jones said that he could take Cormier down in a funny way. However, it did not sit well with Cormier.
Here is what Jones said:
It was my way of trying to develop a new friendship, and he just took it so seriously, and he was just so offended that I didn't know who he was, and from that moment on he decided that there was a beef between us.Jon Jones via Bloody Elbow
Later, Cormier shared his interpretation of the incident in an interview with ESPN MMA. He said that he didn’t care about Jones not knowing him. However, he felt insulted by his comments and questioned how one could break the ice with an insult.
Although the hatred started with a silly interaction, it grew into one of the most famous beefs between two fighters. One cannot forget their brawl on the media day of UFC 178, their interview with Fox, and their press conference comments. But, as of today, they both work for UFC in different capacities, and the hatred has cooled off.
