After the fight, Masvidal announced that he doesn’t want to fight anymore and wants to retire from the sport.
Masvidal had an amazing career as a UFC fighter, achieving a lot of success and becoming one of the biggest draws in the division. The fighter mentioned that he always wanted to get a ‘Submission of the Year’ award but failed to do so. According to Masvidal, other than that, there are various other things that he wanted to do but didn’t get a chance to do.
He said: “This may sound crazy. There was a where to u could have gotten. I had a game plan but I always wanted to try to seal off like a submission of the year award. If I had like one or two good submissions…That would have been f***** submission of the year. In my career and professional side there are numerous things that I wrote that I wanted to do. I didn’t get to do it.”
Masvidal is majorly known for his flamboyant knockouts and striking and wasn’t great at grappling. The fighter only has two submissions throughout his MMA career, of which one was in UFC against Michael Chiesa at UFC on Fox 8.

After UFC 287 co-main event It was shocking for a lot of fans because nobody expected the ‘Gamebred’ to retire after the fight. The Miami crowd gave an amazing farewell to the fighter. However, during the post-fight press conference, Gilbert Burns called out Masvidal for rubbing his body with a lotion that made it harder for the Brazilian to get a better grip while grappling. Masvidal responded to the accusations and clearly stated that he didn’t do anything and Burns’ technique might be the reason for his inefficiency.
“Maybe I’m the sweatiest motherf***** he knows, but I’ve never greased. I’ve never put on anything in my life for forever. I’ve never done that in my life. Maybe he should blame his technique for f****** being shitty, not being able to do anything but just hold on the ground,” said Masvidal.
Despite this little controversy, both fighters had great mutual respect during the fight and there might not have been any bad blood between Burns and Masvidal after it.
