“I’m trying to fight in the UK soon” Jorge Masvidal STILL pushing to get a fight with new Welterweight champion Leon Edwards
Jorge Masvidal (L), Leon Edwards (R)
Jorge Masvidal is a UFC icon. He has embodied Tony Montana and everything that is great about Miami – that, even a person from a different background can make it if they put it in the work necessary for it.
But, that is not to say that everything has gone swimmingly for the American fighter with Cuban roots.
At the end of 2019, things looked only upwards and onwards for the then-surging Welterweight. He had just knocked Darren Till out cold in his own backyard, sent Ben Askren flying to the canvas with a 7-second flying knee knockout and at the end of the year, defeated Nate Diaz to become the “BMF” of the UFC.
Since, however, things haven’t looked great – he has lost to Kamaru Usman twice (once getting knocked out) and also lost to old-foe Colby Covington (with one judge scoring the bout 50-44 in Covington’s favour).
Jorge Masvidal hints at fighting Leon Edwards in London for the title
The defeat to Colby Covington really pushed Jorge Masvidal’s stock down, in the Welterweight division, and in the picture of his stardom in the UFC. Once hailed as one of the realest fighters on the roster, the Miami man also faces a court date with Covington for ‘’sucker-punching’ him outside a steak-house after their fight, and reportedly causing “brain trauma”.
These are hard pills to swallow for Jorge Masvidal, who once reckoned with ex-champ Usman for the belt. As of today, he is #9 in the welterweight rankings, and it doesn’t look like he will climb up the ladder anytime soon – the fight reportedly agreed with Gilbert Burns has stalled in negotiations.
To pile onto his newfound misery, he has been mocked for calling for a title shot against the Briton, Leon Edwards. Three years back, the two were involved in a backstage scuffle that left Leon Edwards with a cut under his eye. Ever since, Edwards has called out Masvidal to settle their beef in the octagon – but, each time, the call fell on deaf ears, as Masvidal seemingly ignored him, giving him the cold shoulder.
Now, with Leon Edwards reigning atop the 170 pound mountain, after the spectacular head-kick KO of Usman, Masvidal has been repeatedly calling for a title shot against him. But, this has landed him in hot water. Daniel Cormier recently suggested Edwards to ignore Masvidal, returning his own favour, while Dave Lovell, Edwards’ coach asked Masvidal to wait “at the back of the line.” Masvidal hasn’t given up, though. In a recently posted Tweet, he said “Can’t say now cause I’m trying to fight in the UK soon.”, in response to a fan question.

Jorge Masvidal is unlikely to get a title shot any time soon for a couple of reasons – the first and most glaring one being that he’s 3-0 since 2020. That never reflects well on title aspirations. Secondly, there are many others who deserve their claim to a title shot – including Kamaru Usman, Khamzat Chimaev, and the always lurking Colby Covington.
