“Pressure is a privilege”Julianna Pena and Amanda Nunes have fiery words of inspiration as they set to fight for the title at UFC 277
Nunes and Pena will be the first PPV headlined by women this year.
Amanda Nunes will have a tough obstacle in Julianna Pena if she wishes to accomplish her dream of being a double champion again. While many think the last time around was a simple fluke and that with time and a healthy camp Nunes can easily get back her belt.
However, dismissing a veteran like Pena in a sport like ours is all but stupid. Pena was able to finish the champ in just the second round, the first time they faced off, all the way back at UFC 269. One of the biggest upsets in MMA history, the fight made Pena only the 5th woman ever to hold the title since it’s introduction in 2012.
Many fans feel Nunes herself is compromised due to a weight cut and this is only the second time she fights at Bantamweight, since 2019. Hence why many feel Pena has Nunes’s number at 135. At the ceremonial weigh-ins bout women had fierce words for their opponent as they head into what promises to be one of the best rematches in WMMA.
Julianna Pena and Amanda Nunes set to give everything in their iconic rematch
Nunes who was first to scale has an upward battle to face, for the first time in her life since the last 8 years. With a change of camp from ATT due to lingering issues with a lack of dedicated teams, overcrowding and the presence of fellow female prospect and ex olympian Kayla Harrison, this will be the first fight Nunes has under her new gym, her own.
When asked by Rogan about how she feels being a contender for the first time in more than half a decade, she said, ” Life is like that sometimes, not everything goes your way, so now I’m back here, to get my title back Saturday, you guys make sure you’re all there, I’m going to be a double champ again.
Pena, despite being a champion she has a battle to face herself. A fight to prove her legitimacy as a champion and that the first time was not a simple fluke. To this effort, she seems to have left no stone unturned in training or promoting the fight.
As she stepped off the scales, her daughter Isa Pena was alongside her facing off against Nunes. When it came to answering Joe Rogan, Pena had inspiring words about her battle to prove her legitimacy as a champion and not be remembered as just another fluke.
“Pressure is a privilege, “ said Julianna of her ordeal, she continued, ” I’m gonna give everything I have to retain this belt tomorrow night, ” to loud applause from the Texas crowd.
