Justin Gaethje astonished everyone with his head-kick knockout of Dustin Poirier at UFC 291. ‘The Highlight’ showed that he has significantly improved since his last fight with Poirier and broke the diamond in the second round. While Gaethje won big and became the new BMF champion, the former BMF champion Jorge Masvidal lost quite a lot.

Before his retirement, Masvidal trained in the same gym as Poirier. No doubt Jorge was betting on The Diamond to become the next BMF champion. However, he might have bet quite a lot. In an interview after the main event, Masvidal revealed he had bet $100,000 on Poirier to win the fight. Given the odds, Masvidal would have made over $65,000 easily had Poirier won. However, now it seems that Gamebred’s kids would have to forego their private school dreams.

I put a hundred thousand dollars on DP, on Dustin Poirier. Kids, I’m sorry. You gotta go to public school now,” Masvidal said. Gamebred added that although Gaethje won the fight, Poirier was winning in the second round. The former BMF champion also stated that Poirier was in the best shape of his life, so the loss hurt him even more.

However gutted Masvidal was, he passed on the torch to Gaethje. Now Gamebred will probably return to his life promoting fights and placing risky bets on fighters.

Justin Gaethje surprised the fight fans with a second-round knockout of Dustin Poirier at UFC 291. Given the results of the last fight between Gaethje and Poirier, fans expected an all-out 5-round war for the rematch. Due to his previous win over Gaethje, Poirier was the betting favorite going into the fight.

However, Gaethje stunned the world with a Leon Edwards reminiscent head kick knockout. The Highlight became the new BMF champion and received another fight bonus for his performance. Both fighters are 1-1 in their last two fights, and the idea of a trilogy does not sound bad. While Gaethje does not want to fight Poirier again, he is ready to go for a trilogy if he asks.

In the cage after the fight, I said hey man, let’s both agree to never fight each other again. Unless you want to have it, then I’m here. I would never deny him the opportunity just like he did not deny me the opportunity,” Gaethje said.

Gaethje is next in line to fight the winner of Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev. Although Gaethje wants to fight Makhachev, he hopes that Oliveira wins the fight, so he can avenge yet another lightweight fighter.
