Eye pokes such as these are not rare in the UFC as they happen in almost every event. That includes important title fights which result in a temporary halt in the action or unfair results such as this. Many fans and fighters have claimed that because of the nature of the gloves, the fighters often accidentally poke each other’s eyes.

Justin Gaethje’s coach, Trevor Wittman is extremely popular in the MMA community. Other than Gaethje, Whitman has worked with various UFC champs such as Kamaru Usman and Rose Namajunas. Wittman has immense experience in MMA and developed a type of gloves that is allegedly better than the ones UFC is using.

Wittman and Gaethje even showed these gloves to Joe Rogan on his podcast. Rogan was immediately impressed by them and during a conversation with Leon Edwards talked about the efficiency of the gloves.

Trevor Wittman’s company has the best glove. They are so superior to the gloves they (UFC) use now. The ONX gloves, that Trevor Wittman designed, your hand is always curved.

Rogan went into detail about how the UFC gloves tend to make fighters’ fingers straight which results in eye pokes. On the other hand, the ONX gloves are naturally curved and also protect the hand from fractures. It’s been three years since Wittman has developed and shared the gloves with Rogan and the UFC. However, the promotion has never considered using them in fights or training.
