UFC’s pound for pound king, Kamaru Usman is out of action following hand surgery. The champ last defended his welterweight title against his arch-nemesis, Colby Covington in a five rounded affair. He was supposed to face Leon Edwards, but this fight is delayed until Usman’s not declared fit to compete.
Even though he can’t step inside the octagon, he remains active on social media and pokes fun at possible opponents. He’s been pushing for a boxing match against Canelo Alvarez for a long time, and things got heated recently when Ali Abdelaziz called Canelo a coward for avoiding the fight against ‘The Nigerian Nightmare.’
Kamaru has defeated almost all top-ranked contenders in his division, and he has expressed interest in moving up to the light heavyweight division (skipping middleweight because of his relationship with Israel Adesanya) and challenging for the belt. This move never came to fruition, but a former lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira claimed that he’d love to test his will against Usman.
“Look at how big he is”- Kamaru Usman compliments Islam Makhachev on his amazing physique
Oliveira had to forfeit his title at UFC 274 because he missed weight by 0.5 pounds. He defeated Justin Gaethje in the very first round, but unfortunately, he had to head home without a belt, now he’ll most likely face Islam Makhachev for the vacant title, and many believe Islam would rule the lightweight division for years to come.
In an interesting video posted by Anatomy of a Fighter, Usman can be seen walking with Islam, and they’re talking about a possible fight between them, Usman says Islam and him would fight if he can capture the lightweight gold, Islam then jokingly asks him if he’s going to come down to 155, Usman breaks into a laugh and says you’ll be middleweight by then considering your height and size.
Fans always fantasized about a fight between Khabib and Usman, but that never happened, if this fight does materialize, it’d be interesting to see who comes out on top.
