Kamaru Usman opens up about his relationship with Israel Adesanya
Kamaru Usman and Israel Adesanya
Kamaru Usman, current UFC Welterweight Champion, talked about fighting for a belt at a higher weight class with reporter Brett Okamoto. Usman is currently slated to fight Leon Edwards at UFC 278.
Brett asked Kamaru if he would ever consider going up in weight and taking another belt, maybe even coordinating with Israel Adesanya so that they would both go up a weight class. Kamaru says that even though he has not really talked about it with Israel he did think about it when Israel challenged Jan Blachowicz. Perhaps Israel would vacate the belt and Kamaru could move up, since he would prefer to not fight Israel if possible.
In any case Kamaru enjoys his relationship with Israel too much to endanger it. When it comes to most fighters they can’t help but size each other up even if they are not competing at the same weight. He remembers feeling that when close to fighters like Charles Oliveira, Gilbert Burns and Yuri. This dynamic is not one Kamaru looks forward to but he is thankful for it as it keeps him on his toes. But with Israel, even though he is a champion, they can just chill when in each other’s company.
Kamaru Usman set to face Leon Edwards for the second time
Leon Edwards will face Kamaru again and this time it’s going to be for the belt. Edwards won 8 straight fights following his loss to Usman in the first fight and currently rides a 9 fight-winning streak.
Even though Usman beat him once he still reminds everyone that Edwards is a dangerous fighter who has improved a lot since their first matchup. Edwards clearly has better technique but Usman’s power might negate any advantage there.
Not to mention that Usman is quite comfortable wrestling if need be, however, Edwards has improved his grapple game significantly. The fight promises to be a close one with fans eagerly awaiting UFC 278.
