Khamzat Chimaev doesn’t seem to be interested at all in the fans’ narrative sometimes, or maybe he did ignore Kevin Holland’s approaching glove touch intentionally to continue with his fake jab followed by a takedown. Chimaev is coming off another sweeping victory, this time at UFC 279 as he becomes the second person to submit Holland in his UFC career and gets a 12th straight victory in his undefeated record. Chimaev is now 12-0 with 11 finishes in his overall UFC career.

However, UFC 279’s fight week in itself seemed all about Chimaev. He was originally supposed to be fighting former UFC fighter and MMA legend Nate Diaz in the main-event slot. A pre-fight press conference was arranged but right before that, Chimaev got into a heated altercation with Diaz and Holland separately. This led to the cancellation of the press conference. Later on, Chimaev showed up to the inaugural weigh-ins with a weight of 178.5 lbs, exceeding the eligible weight to fight his opponent by 7.5 lbs. So that’s when he was booked to fight Holland, who was already fighting at catchweight.

In his post-fight media scrum at UFC 279, Chimaev talks about his win over Holland, his reluctance to fight Robert Whittaker, his thoughts on Nate Diaz’s win, his weigh-in issues, and much more. In the midst of all, Holland was asked about the first few seconds of the Holland fight where Holland raised his hand for a glove touch but Chimaev took the Texas native right down and started the battle.

“I don’t understand, how can I see his hands? I wanna take off his head, I am gonna watch his hand? All I was watching is his head you know, where’s his head? I don’t know… always people find some funny things to say, so I don’t know… I told him I’m a young guy, he’s a young guy, maybe we can meet again. Otherwise, come down Sweden, I will help him, you know… says Chimaev.

What do you make of Chimaev’s answer to the fake glove touch which was originally his jab? Do you think he did Holland wrong or is it a fighter’s sole responsibility to protect him/herself at all times? Who do you think is next for Chimaev? Many believe that an elite wrestler like Chimaev should fight against his American counterpart in Colby Covington. Do you think Chimaev has the potential to become the 2-division world champion in the UFC?
