“Tell me when you’re ready”- Khamzat Chimaev demands a shot at divisional gold as he calls out to Kamaru Usman

Kamaru Usman and Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev took the MMA world by surprise in 2020 when he defeated John Phillips and Rhys McKee with a 10 days gap between the fights. After that, the ‘Borz’ continued to get dominant victories against fighters such as Gerald Meerschaert and Li Jingliang.

Chimaev got his biggest break when he got a shot at Gilbert Burns at UFC 273. Before the fight, Burns was confident that he would easily finish the Brazilian but the reality was far different. The fight exceeded everybody’s expectations and turned out to be an absolute war. Both the fighters went all out the fight was extremely close. Burns showed Chimaev what it’s like to fight the top fighters in the welterweight division.

After 3 rounds of non-stop action and entertainment, Chimaev was declared the winner via split decision. Although, it attracted mixed reactions from the fans as some believed that Burns was robbed.

Chimaev recently took to Twitter to share a picture of him and Usman side by side. In the caption, the Russian born Swedish called out Usman for a fight whenever he is ready. He wrote :

tell me when you’re ready @USMAN84kg ,”

After the win against Burns, Chimaev is currently the #3 the fighter in the welterweight division under Colby Covington and Leon Edwards. Usman has already cleared out the whole division not once but twice and the only challenge he has is Edwards. The Brit has been undefeated in his last 9 bouts and is next in line for the title shot. It would be the second time, Edwards will take on Usman as in the first fight Usman stopped Edwards easily.

It’s true that Chimaev has gained a lot of momentum due to his last performances inside the octagon, it’s still pretty early to give him the title shot. Usman will most probably fight Edwards next and after that will think about someone else.
