“You will never be champ”- Khamzat Chimaev dismisses the chances of Gilbert Burns of ever being an UFC champion
Khamzat Chimaev- Gilbert Burns
The main contest of UFC 279 is scheduled to take place on September 10 and will feature Nate Diaz and Khamzat Chimaev. Diaz and the UFC are embroiled in a contract dispute because they cannot agree on an opponent for the last bout of his current contract and because he cannot get the organisation to release him. But that argument appears to be over now that the American has verbally consented to face Chimaev.
The Chechen-born Swedish MMA fighter stands six feet two inches tall and weighs 170 pounds. Borz is a 75-inch reach orthodox fighter. With a record of 11 victories, the fighter is currently unbeaten in his professional MMA career. The former wrestler has triumphed in six knockouts and four submissions in his MMA matches. Gilbert Burns was the opponent in UFC 273 and the winner by decision.
Nate, is a favourite among UFC fans and is 6 feet tall and 170 pounds. Diaz is a southpaw with a 76-inch reach. Diaz, who is currently a welterweight, started out in the UFC as a lightweight. The Stockton native has a twenty-win, thirteen-loss record in professional MMA. The younger Diaz brother hasn’t won since 2019. He has lost his last two matches, going 0-2 overall.

“I feel a little bit of pain”- Khamzat Chimaev reflects on his bout against Gilbert Burns
Following his recent victory over world No. 2 welterweight Gilbert, Khamzat Chmaev has now established himself as one of the top welterweights in the world. He behaved differently against Gilbert than he had before when facing other opponents. During several points of the fight, Khamzat was exposed and required to overcome difficulty, which he successfully did.
However, it showed that Khamzat is indeed a human. Khamzat himself was very critical of his performance and expressed his sentiments about the fight in the post-fight interview where he stated, “I’m happy. These are the things I was waiting for a long time. Now I’m bloody. I’m tired. I feel a little bit of pain. I love this s***.”
The fact that Khamzat is aware that he needs to put in more work and gain experience competing against top-tier fighters in the UFC helps him seem more authentic as an athlete who is conscious of the need to keep improving.
Additionally, Chimaev recently discussed the immediate aftermath of the remarkable UFC 273 fight during an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. Burns made several calls for a rematch, asserted that two more rounds would have allowed him to raise his hand, and cited statistics such as the number of important strikes that “Borz” took in comparison to his prior four fights under the UFC brand.
He stated, “I make him famous. And he lost the fight, he was happier. I was angry for that fight. I win that fight, I was angry because I didn’t finish that guy. I don’t understand some guys like Gilbert become happy when they lost the fight.” He then stated his rationale as to why he feels Burns will never be a champion, he added, “I’ll fight with him whenever he wants, but I don’t see he will be champ, because if you’re happy when you lost the fight, you will never be champ. I win my fight, I was like, one month angry at me in training and everything”
While Chimaev will soon be concentrating on his own championship goals after taking a break to fight Nate Diaz in the UFC 279 main event, Burns will be seeking to disprove him by returning to the belt in his upcoming fights. If he does, it’s possible that Chimaev vs. Burns will have a second chapter.
