Khamzat Chimaev recently won a number one contender fight against Kamaru Usman at middleweight. It was via majority decision at the co-main event of UFC 294. However, the middleweight champion, Sean Strickland was left unimpressed by the performance. Strickland in his podcast has already said that anything short of a quick finish of Usman would be considered a disappointment for Chimaev.
Strickland recently was in attendance at the PBR Team Championships where the middleweight champion was asked about Chimeav for UFC Fight Pass. He had an interesting story to tell. Strickland reminisced about the time when Chimaev took offense to a Chechen joke he said. Strickland suggested settling it by fighting. However, Chimaev de-escalated the situation.
This is what Sean Strickland had to say about Chimaev at the PBR Team Championships for UFC Fight Pass:
Me and he are f*cking different. Chimaev could be right here, I'll fight that man to the death. Right here, knowing that I'm gonna die. That ain't f*cking Chimaev, dude.
Khamzat Chimaev is presumably Sean Strickland’s next opponent. Strickland won the middleweight title at UFC 293 with an impressive performance over “The Last Stylebender” Israel Adesanya. Dricus Du Plessis was presumed to be his first defense but that changed after Dana White announced his plans to make the winner of Usman vs Chimaev the next challenger.
Sean Strickland was a vocal critic of UFC 294 as being not good. He said in his podcast that the short-notice nature of the fight reduced the glamour of the event. This is considering the fact that all in the main and co-main were top names in the UFC.
Khamzat Chimeav does not deserve a title shot according to Sean Strickland
Sean Strickland was recently in attendance at the PBR World Championships 2023. Strickland provided his response to UFC 294 for UFC Fight Pass at the event. The middleweight champion was already a vocal detractor of UFC 294. He had already stated that Chimaev winning by decision would be considered an underwhelming performance.
Moreover, Strickland was of the opinion that Chimeav does not deserve a title shot. He also provided the reason for it. This is what Strickland said about it for UFC Fight Pass at PBR World Championship 2023:
He has not earned it. He doesn’t f*cking deserve it and getting decision with a welterweight of a couch doesn’t f*cking earn it.
Strickland and Chimaev have trained together at Extreme Couture. Moreover, both have praised each other for being good fighters. However, in a recent interview with Daniel Cormier, Chimaev said that he is the real champion and not Strickland. Meanwhile, Sean Strickland also had an opinion about Johnny Walker’s plight at UFC 294.
