“You’re already a legend,” Khamzat Chimaev lauds praise on Tony Ferguson’s legacy after the latter’s devastating loss at UFC 274
Khamzat Chimaev- Tony Ferguson
Despite a devastating loss, Tony Ferguson has received the world’s wishes for having a legendary career from the MMA community and Khamzat Chimaev is one of his well-wishers. Ferguson, who last fought in the fight before the co-main event at UFC 274, lost via a devastating front kick knockout from his opponent, former UFC title challenger and former Bellator MMA champion Michael Chandler. Ferguson had Chandler knocked down in the first round but Chandler did the unthinkable in the second.
Now, where Ferguson goes from here is tough to tell, because he has lost 4 in a row and for a fighter to still not give up, the destiny seems quite unforeseen. Regardless, Ferguson believes that he will be back stronger as evident from his tweets and Instagram posts. Chimaev on the other hand fights at welterweight and is coming off a spectacular 3-round war against former title challenger Gilbert Burns in just his fifth UFC fight, which Chimaev won via unanimous decision at UFC 273.
Khamzat Chimaev tells Tony Ferguson to keep his head up despite UFC 274 loss
Chimaev reacted to Ferguson’s loss to Chandler at UFC 274 and therefore said tagging Ferguson on the tweet “Keep your head up you are already a legend in this sport @TonyFergusonXT“
In all aspects, Chimaev is right as well that Ferguson is a legend of this sport. Ferguson was once known for his illustrious 12-fight winning streak and was one of the few UFC fighters back when he hit the 10th straight win to have a double-digit winning streak. Now many fighters have come to have a double digit winning streak since then, including Charles Oliveira, Islam Makhachev, Kamaru Usman and many more.
The future for Chimaev seems bright, he is the real deal now in the UFC and has been absolutely battled tested in the toughest fight of his career i.e. his last fight against Burns. It is interesting to see who will be next for Chimaev. Earlier it was said by UFC President Dana White that he is most likely to fight #1 ranked welterweight Colby Covington, but seems like the UFC has unofficially approached Nate Diaz to fight the last fight of his current contract against Chimaev.
What do you make of Chimaev’s gesture of respecting Ferguson? Where do you put Ferguson amongst your favourite fighters of all time in their prime? And who do you think is next for Chimaev and Ferguson in their respective careers?
