Diaz and Chjimaev will headline the UFC 279 card
Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz may be the biggest mismatch to ever headline a UFC PPV main event. Both fighters are at turning points in their career and a fight against each other doesn’t do any good for the other’s brand. Nate who is set to leave the UFC has absolutely nothing to gain with a win over Chimaev, Chimaev, on the other hand, was all but guaranteed a title shot after beating Gilbert Burns, only had to wait for Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman to sort it out.
While Khamzat has been calling out Nate for some time, Nate seems to realize that this fight is not favorable for him and is more of a courtesy so that he can finally be free of his UFC contract. Infamously Nate refused to fight Khamzat a year earlier, calling him untested and not a real fighter, he also offered his protege, Nick Maximov to fight Khamzat, Maximov’s momentary reaction to this was absolutely priceless.
Nate Diaz has been a UFC veteran for about 15 years. Throughout these years he has given the fans memorable fights and eternal moments on the mic. Hence many fans feel that this is a slap in the face of all those years he sacrificed for the company to send him off against a much younger and well rounded contender in Chimaev.

However Chimaev doesn’t seem too keen to be on the grand farewell for Nate. He is surely carrying his “Smash all, Kill all” mentality as he goes up against the Stockton bad boy. A few days ago he hinted at the fight by sharing the “Spongebob get in the coffin” meme but if there were any doubts he spelled it out for everyone soon after the fight was officially announced to be in the works.
Straight from the Wolf’s mouth, his manager conveyed his athlete’s outlook towards the fight to Brett Okamoto, saying, ” I am going to handle Nate Diaz’s funeral with the UFC” flaunting his total confidence in the fact that he will convincingly beat Diaz.
The fight is scheduled to headline the UFC 279 card, with TJ Dillashaw vs Aljamain Sterling to the bantamweight title set to act as the co-main event. It will the first 5-round fight of Chimaev’s career. Many fans consider this to be the only hope that Nate has against Chimaev, his still untested cardio.
However none of that is reflected in the betting lines as Khamzat comes out as the overwhelming favourite. Currently the line stands at +775 for Diaz and a whopping -1100 for Chimaev. Who do you favour in this fight? Do you think this is a deserving farewell for Nate Diaz?
