“He isn’t that guy who BEAT Conor McGregor,” Khamzat Chimaev SURPRISED by Nate Diaz’s guts to accept fighting him at UFC 279

Khamzat Chimaev- Nate Diaz

Khamzat Chimaev seems to be an exceptional case when it comes to being intimidated by the aura and resume of Nate Diaz. Both Chimaev and Diaz will share the Octagon at UFC 279 in what will be Chimaev’s first five-round fight and Diaz’s last UFC fight. After this, Chimaev might need one more or no win anymore to get a title shot and Diaz will be looking forward to exploring more opportunities in combat sports, such as in terms of exhibition boxing.

The fight has come a long way in the making. Diaz was first rumoured to be fighting former UFC interim-lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier since the latter was parading all over social media for the fight. It was around this time that Chimaev was already booked to fight former UFC title challenger Gilbert Burns at UFC 273 in a 3-round war that turned out to be contending for the Fight of the Year. Diaz on the other hand last fought in July 2021 when he lost a unanimous decision to Leon Edwards at UFC 263.

“Yes of course,” says Chimaev “Because he himself tells in the interviews [this is] a bad match-up for him, you know. Like I can smash that guy easy. The guy’s getting older, he’s not that guy who beat McGregor. He’s not that young guy. This is his last fight, he’s gonna lose his fight. I kill him you know, kick him out, let him go.”
