Smilla Sundell poses with Khamzat Chimaev after a productive training session. Smilla Sundell is the current ONE Women’s Strawweight champion. The Swedish kickboxer made history recently after becoming the youngest person to ever win a world title in Muay Thai. Sundell fought with Jackie Buntan for the championship on April 22 at the ONE 156 event.
The featherweight contest was the co-main event and it delivered what it promised. The fight was thrilling and full of action. ‘The Storm’ was not in a mood of playing around and she charged forward and put a lot of pressure on her opponent. The 17-year-old, used her reach advantage to counter Buntan’s footwork and stopped her from doing anything dangerous.
Sundell’s plan was working out and she kept on throwing strikes with various combinations. Sundell was accurate with her strikes and it helped her get more points. After the end of the final round, Sundell was announced the winner via unanimous decision and was crowned the youngest champion in ONE’s history.
During the post-event press conference, Sundell revealed that she is satisfied with her efforts but would like to improve more in future.
“I’m happy with my performance but there’s a lot to improve on, but I was happy… I think I have to kick more and switch it up a bit,” said Sundell.
