“I’m Muhammad Ali” Khamzat Chimaev’s powerful statement at UFC 279 Octagon Interview will leave you with chills
Chimaev compared himself to Ali and Mike Tyson after his victory
Khamzat Chimaev may have had a bad week in terms of his fan following but the in no way did that affect his performance once the cage doors closed behind him. Chimaev, was originally scheduled to face Nate Diaz, in the main event for UFC 279, but missed weight by around 8lbs, leading to the main event being scrapped.
The weigh-in blunder by Chimaev caused the entire card to be reshuffled among the top 3 fights. This included Chimaev being dropped down to the co-main event against loud-mouthed welterweight, Kevin Holland. While no one expected Holland to stand a chance against Chimaev’s grappling, many thought as long as they stood up, Holland had a chance.
Immediately at the opening buzzer all that was lost, as Chimaev shot for a takedown and commenced what was among the most one-sided two-minute beatdowns on Holland. Taking him down and even slamming him at will, Holland looked no match for the Chechen as was soundly submitted in the very first round.

In his octagon interview, Chimaev was still rushing with adrenaline, wooing at regular intervals while unintelligibly screaming out his standard , “Kill everybody, smash everybody” one-liner. He responded to the booing cried saying, “Say what now, this is Chechnya Motherf****”
This was all going well until Joe started the interview by grilling him over his weight miss. While Chimaev tried to dismiss it as nothing but the doctor’s fault. Joe then said, “But if this was a championship fight, it would not be happening” at which point he reveals that he walked into the weigh-in after rehydration as the doctor had told Joe that he stopped cutting weight in the early hours of the weigh-in day.
Meaning while he stepped on the scales at 178 lbs, he was much closer to making weight than that. Later he went on to thank his team including his BJJ coach Alan Nascimento among others. Finally, he credited his boxing coach to being the best in the world, and by association making him the best boxer.
“I’m the black belt here, I’m (the) best boxer, I’m Mike Tyson, I’m Muhhamad Ali” proclaimed Chimaev as he pushed away the microphone to Rogan. Are you impressed by Chimaev’s performance at UFC 279? Let us know!
