Laura Sanko is the latest addition to the UFC broadcasting team and the sole female commentator. The fans have loved how Sanko does her commentary duties with a fact-based argument. As such, Sanko took it upon herself to educate the MMA community about false rumors of Ian Garry adopting his wife’s ex-husband’s last name.
Sanko recently appeared on the JAXXON Podcast. She revealed the real reason behind Garry’s name change to ‘Ian Machado Garry.’ Sanko explained that the move was intended to make Layla’s son from her previous marriage feel included in the family. This contradicts speculations that Ian Garry adopted his wife Layla’s ex-husband’s last name.
I’ll tell you the real story… the reason why he changed his name is because his wife had a son from her previous marriage and he wanted to make that son feel just as much as a part of the family as their son that they have together.Laura Sanko via The JAXXON podcast
Before her relationship with Garry, Layla had a son named Lucas from her ex-husband, Richard Cullen. Cullen is also Garry’s nutritionist. Garry aimed to make Lucas feel like part of the family, just like Leandro – Garry and Layla’s biological child. To create unity, Garry adopted Layla’s maiden name ‘Machado.’
Laura Sanko’s words highlighted Garry’s commitment as a dad and husband. Despite fame in UFC and controversies, Garry seemed focused on being a loving family man for his kids. Garry is in a continuous back-and-forth with Colby Covington about a potential fight. Though more fans and fighters love to hate on Garry, a few have shown sympathy for the rising Irish star.
Vicente Luque defends Ian Garry despite bad reputation as a teammate
Vicente Luque trained with Ian Garry at KillCliff FC. Luque was set to face Garry at UFC 296, but Garry withdrew due to illness. The fans and many fighters like Colby Covington and Chael Sonnen dissed Garry for his withdrawal. However, Luque chose to present the truth rather than diss Garry along with others.
Vicente Luque praised their time as teammates at Kill Cliff FC. This came despite the recent drama involving Garry’s dismissal from certain gyms. Though not close friends outside, Luque felt he had a good relationship with the Irishman.
I felt like we always had a very good relationship, very friendly…He was a good teammate for me, always.Vicente Luque via MMA Fighting
Like Laura Sanko, Luque offered the truth about having Garry as a training partner rather than joining others to diss the Irish star. He couldn’t pinpoint issues with Garry’s conduct at the gym. Luque noted Garry’s drive and hard work ethic. Though they were set to fight, Luque’s words showed mutual respect and professionalism between the fighters. This went beyond hype or controversy.
