With a spectacular 69-second TKO over Sergei Pavlovich, Tom Aspinall won his 285lbs title gold. But the victory at UFC 295’s co-main event has only earned him the slated position of the interim champion. With heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones out of the title contention picture, Aspinall has been open to other opportunities. Along with a renewed interest in boxing ventures, he recently even settled for a probable new opponent. In the aftermath of UFC 299, he aspires to face the victor. Now, Brock Lesnar gets into the mix for UFC 300.
Jones, who was to originally face Stipe Miocic at the event, faced a pectoral tear. Now, with another consequent surgery, he is out for good. On the sidelines, the 14-3-0 striker out of Team Kaobon has been willing to face Lesnar. Concurrently, veteran and MMA commentator Chael Sonnen has instigated the same. In a recent episode of the ‘Beyond the Fight‘ podcast, Sonnen has deliberated on the matter.
Consequently, he is not the only one. Former champion Michael Bisping had made a case for Lesnar vs. Aspinall to headline UFC 300 (‘Believe You Me‘ podcast). Notably, Aspinall himself has also expressed interest in said pairing. Now, with a tweet surfacing (from FightFanatics.com and MMAUncensored), covering Sonnen’s viewpoints, fight fans are not well acclimated towards it.
A prime reaction retorted, “He has officially lost his goddamn mind“. Especially with UFC 299 looking so stacked, MMA enthusiasts are angsty on big fights headlining the historic UFC 300 card. But coincidentally, Lesnar is not it.
Fans react to Brock Lesnar vs. Tom Aspinall matchup possibility
With champion Jon Jones out of true active status, Tom Aspinall is whiling away at the sidelines. The Briton considers his interim title gold moot without a chance to contend for an undisputed one. Despite, multiple callouts and a recent Twitter-rant skirmish, the chances run slim.
Comparatively, a match with former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar seems a better prospect to Aspinall. During a recent interview with Casino Canada (pre-UFC 295), the fighter said that 5-3-0 Lesnar used to be a dream fight for him. Now, with Chael Sonnen advocating the same strain of idea, here’s how some fans have reacted to the matter:
Accordingly, some fans have gibed at Lesnar being old and ‘slow on his feet’ during his heavyweight tenure. Despite suffering a shocking submission skid to Frank Mir in his debut, the South Dakota native reeled off four straight wins. Including a title reign and two successful defenses. Lesnar then returned to the wrestling ring after consecutive losses to Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem.
With the run being such a while ago, fans are not set on such a pairing. Many have also sneered that the “Beast Incarnate” cannot be the only answer to spice up a fight card for MMA fans. Accordingly, some have mocked Sonnen as well, for touting such a ‘casual‘ fan-like mentality.
