UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards is planning to be part of one of the biggest cards in UFC history (UFC 300). The 22-3 striker recently made a successful title defense against Colby Covington, at UFC 296. The British Southpaw trains out of the Renegade MMA Gym in Birmingham, England. The Birmingham native recently received a hero’s welcome at halftime during Aston Villa’s home win against Burnley. The 170lber showed off his belt in full grandeur.

Edwards’ last two outings were title defenses, against “Chaos” and Kamaru Usman. The fighter has naturally been successful on all occasions. “Rocky” is on a 12-win streak, except for 1 NC against Belal Muhammad. He later announced at Villa Park that he will defend the welterweight gold at UFC 300, on April 13, 2024, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Here’s what he said on the matter:

I will defend my belt in April at UFC 300 in Vegas again, then hopefully in the summertime get a fight back home in Birmingham at Villa Park. I’m in talks with the UFC, so hopefully we can get it done.

While his all-out welterweight affair, headlining UFC 296 was a dragged-out attempt, he won nevertheless. Michael Chiesa recently downgraded it to a “mere point-scoring match lacking intensity,” against the now 17-4 Covington. He had also bagged a unanimous decision victory against Nate Diaz at UFC 263, who has also thrown his hat into the ring for UFC 300.

Most likely though, the fighter could face the 23-3 MMA, 14-3 UFC Muhammad as his challenger. The duo has faced off before as well. Following suit of “Rocky”, Muhammad has a 5-win streak, ranking him as the next top choice.

MMA Hour’s Ariel Helwani reported on the matter, taking to his account on X. Later, ESPN itself solidified the news, and the coverage by TNT Sports. Helwani, one of the top combat sports journalists, however, nudged in Belal Muhammad as the obvious choice. Check out his commentary on the matter, in his initial tweets, down below.

Muhammad has been long gunning for a shot at title contention. Edwards is undefeated in his last 13 fights. Muhammad has a similar absolute tear, with a 5-win streak against top contenders in the division. He recently mocked Edwards and his son’s intimate moment to make a claim to the UFC title, yet again. Only time will tell if this matchup pairing comes to fruition soon.
