“100% will give him title shot,” Leon Edwards open to fight Nate Diaz for title defence if the latter defeats Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279
Leon Edwards vs Nate Diaz at UFC 263
The fight game is a serious one but sometimes, there are opponents that excite you and make you happy like none other, Leon Edwards has that name which he has fought and will excite him again and again. Edwards was crowned the new UFC welterweight champion when this past weekend when he knocked out the former champion, Kamaru Usman via vicious head kick knockout at the main event of UFC 278 in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States.
Edwards is now known for his wins over the likes of Usman, Donald Cerrone, Gunnar Nelson, Vicente Luque and many more. However, Edwards’ most fun fight is none other than against UFC megastar Nate Diaz. Diaz is fighting next month against UFC welterweight Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279. This will be Chimaev’s first fight at five rounds and Diaz’s last UFC fight overall. Both the fighters are proper mixed-martial artists and believe in using all tools efficiently in stand-up as well as in wrestling.
Leon Edwards calls Nate Diaz a “G” in a very complimentary challenge for the Stockton native
In an interview with Ariel Helwani at the MMA Hour, Edwards talks about his emotional video call interaction with his mother and son after the stunning UFC 278 victory, the buildup of the fight, the challenges of fighting in a place with high altitude and much more. In the midst of all, Edwards, who pulled off the unthinkable, wishes that his former opponent Diaz does the same by defeating a very heavy favourite in Khamzat Chimaev.
“Imagine the scenes [if Nate beats Khamzat],” says Edwards “The scenes would be crazy. I will 100% give Nate a title shot because Nate’s a G, man, I always said it, even after the fight. He’s one of the guys who the game has never changed him, you know. So IF that does happen, Nate’s definitely getting a title shot… March, April, around that time, good to go [for first title defence],” concludes Edwards.
What did you make of Edwards’ offer to give Diaz a title shot in future, even after knowing that Chimaev’s fight will be Diaz’s last fight? Do you think Diaz will sign again with the UFC contract just to get another title shot in his career? Who do you think will win between Diaz and Chimaev, does the winner really deserves a title shot?
