“I’ll give him the title shot,” Leon Edwards wants first title defence against Jorge Masvidal after defeating Kamaru Usman at UFC 278
Leon Edwards- Jorge Masvidal
UFC welterweight Leon Edwards is finally seeing his aspirations to reality as he has finally got his long-awaited, much deserving title shot against the reigning, defending UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 278 come August 20, 2022, in Utah. Edwards last fought seven years ago in his first fight against Usman. Ever since then, Edwards has been on a 9 fight winning streak with only one no-contest.
Edwards’ line of wins includes the likes of Vicente Luque, Gunnar Nelson, Donald Cerrone, Rafael Dos Anjos, Nate Diaz, Bryan Barberena and many more. Edwards is now looking to grab the UFC gold and tend to become the second UFC champion out of England after UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping and also looking to avenge his last loss. Edwards also has some unfinished business with a fighter he never fought but hates to his core, UFC megastar Jorge Masvidal.
Leon Edwards wants Jorge Masvidal in the O2 Arena, London aka the birthplace of their rivalry
Back in 2019, Edwards and Masvidal won their respective fights under the same card back at UFC London (Fight Night 147) headlined by Masvidal and his then-opponent Darren Till. Masvidal won his fight via a spectacular knockout then and Edwards won his fight via split decision. During the post-fight interview of the winners, Masvidal felt intervened by Edwards calling him out from a distant place from where Masvidal was giving his interview. So suddenly Masvidal walks up to Edwards and within a few seconds of talking, Masvidal lands 3 bare knuckle punches on Edwards leaving the Brit fighter injured on the face.
Now Edwards came for an interview at MMA Fighting’s THE MMA HOUR with Ariel Helwani to talk about his another unfulfilled wish of fighting Masvidal someday. Edwards and Masvidal were supposed to fight each other back in UFC 269 but Masvidal had to pull out due to a rib injury. Now Edwards looks back to that time and what could be done now.
“I don’t think he wants to fight, you know,” says Edwards. “I’ve always said that he doesn’t want to fight, you know, and lastly, I would’ve loved for that fight to happen… I wondered about I’ll give him the title shot, like, that’ll be a fantastic fight in the U.K., bring it back to the O2 where it [the incident back in 2019] happened. That’s what I want to do next with this [title fight with Usman],“ concludes Edwards.
What do you make of Masvidal vs Edwards in London? Do you think that fight will sell Pay-per-views on the charts considering their backstory sunk in bad blood? Who do you think will win that fight? Do you think Masvidal is getting any title shot anyway considering his 3-fight skid? Who do you think wins between Edwards and his next opponent Kamaru Usman come UFC 278?
