Li Jingliang prevents apocalypse as he stops Tony Ferguson from tripping over wires before UFC 279
Li and Ferguson met backstage after the ceremonial weigh ins
Li Jingliang and Tony Ferguson were opponents just 24 hours ago but now can back to being cordial with each other. The two were originally supposed to be the co-main event for UFC 279 but due to a recent shakeup to the card, they now have different opponents. They met each other backstage after the ceremonial weigh-ins where they hugged it out.
Not that they were enemies in any way prior to this, in fact, quite the contrary. Li was a huge fan of Ferguson and was hyping up his opponent by reminding the fans that not too long ago, he was the boogeyman of arguably the best division in the UFC. Tony is also on great terms with another Chinese fighter, Zhang Weili, to who he gifted a baseball before UFC 248.
Jingliang has also become a major topic of discussion this week for still being in high spirits despite all that’s happened. Notably Li’s segment on an EMBEDDED episode where he showcased the custom-made suit that he revealed he was excited to show off at the presser. The press conference fell apart due to a brawl that took place backstage and later on would also have to sacrifice his co-main event spot against his idle and accept an opponent 10lbs heavier.

Li never backed down and deserves a lot of credit for the event still staying in place, the latest example of this happened after his meeting with Ferguson during the ceremonial weigh-ins. Yes Li saved this event yet again. By simply cautioning Tony about some wires caught in his feet.
For those who don’t remember, one of Tony’s many canceled fights between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomdeov was because he tripped on some production wires while fulfilling his fight week media obligations for UFC 223. This caused a freak accident that led to his knee being cut open requiring multiple stitches and putting him out of action for almost 6 months.
After they hugged and bid farewell, the Leech noticed that Ferguson’s foot was caught up in some wires. The leech immediately cried out to Tony saying, “careful, careful, careful.” Eventually, Ferguson untangled the wires off his foot and was enough notified by one of the media personnel, “it’s a minefield in here”
Li will face Daniel Rodriguez at a catch weight of 180 lbs while Ferguson will headline the pay-per-view along with fellow veteran Nate Diaz.
