Max Holloway attended a media scrum prior to his fight with Chan-sung Jung “The Korean Zombie.” Reporters asked if he had a message for the people of Hawaii after Maui was ravaged by wildfires two weeks ago.
Max Holloway appeared very emotional and sensitive about the topic. He expressed his anger because of the lack of actions from the authorities to subdue the crisis. In addition, he praised the people of Hawaii for standing up and being resilient when the authorities did not do the needful. While talking about his connection to Hawaii: “I always go in there (The Octagon) with Hawaii on my back. It’s a little bit heavier now.”
Furthermore, Holloway is a native of Waianae on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Hence, Holloway’s feelings are quite understandable and evident given the loss of human life and historical cultural buildings. The current death toll stands at 114 confirmed fatalities, with the number expected to rise with more than 1,000 individuals still missing. Many people who lost their lives were acquaintances of Hollway which made the matter more personal and sensitive for him.
So far, Hawaii has been receiving help from people all across the country, including famous names like Floyd Mayweather. The UFC is also providing its support with the “UFC Loves Hawaii” initiative which seeks global awareness and fundraising for wildfire-ravaged communities. The people of Hawaii remain in desperate need of any support like this.
